Classic Red Velvet Cake Recipe

Easy Step-by-Step Instructions!

What you need:

cake flour cocoa powder baking soda salt unsalted butter granulated sugar eggs oil red food color vanilla extract white vinegar buttermilk cream cheese powdered sugar

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the cake flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.

In another bowl use a mixer to combine the butter and sugar on medium speed. Then add in the eggs, oil, red food coloring, vanilla extract, and vinegar.

Mix in the dry ingredients in three additions alternating with the buttermilk, starting and ending with the dry ingredients.

Evenly distribute the cake batter between two cake pans and bake. Once they are finished, place the pans on a wire rack to cool.

While the cake layers cool, make the cream cheese frosting by mixing together the cream cheese,  butter, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract until smooth.

To assemble the cake, level the tops of each cake and place one of the layers on a cake stand. Top with part of the frosting, and smooth it out into one even layer.

Place the second cake layer on top, then use the remaining frosting to coat the top and sides of the cake.
